The Future of SMEs in the Philippines

Senior Economist, Asian Development Bank

The economic impacts of COVID-19 have hit Philippines’ micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises the hardest. Due to this, they are facing a serious lack of funds to continue business operations during the pandemic. Their ability to access finance is limited even during pre-COVID-19 periods,  and a prolonged pandemic and strict quarantine measures are making it more difficult for them to raise appropriate working and growth capital from formal financial institutions and markets.

The discussion addresses firstly, what smaller firms need to bounce back from the pandemic, the role of capital markets for them, and the strategic actions they will need in finance to survive and grow during and post COVID-19. Secondly, how all of these will be implemented.
